Goal
Explain complicated bits in layman’s terms, and inject some tone of voice into functional messages.
Approach
I worked closely with the UI designer to come up with designs that could comfortably accommodate the text I wanted to use, although I had to make a compromise on character count in a few places.
Generally speaking, where there is an action button, I try to begin with a verb and follow the rule of being able to prepend “I want to…” to any button.
I followed the tone of voice guidelines I helped to develop (which regrettably allowed exclamation marks).
For the settings screen, we decided to use switches. I made sure that all of the copy I used would work with a switch action (on/off, yes/no action).
Outcome
A consistent tone across the app, even in the smallest of places. And some pleasantly surprised customers.
